Meditation + Trauma Healing

A few weeks ago I stepped outside my comfort zone to share a piece of myself I thought I’d never share.

When I decided to create meditations for @insighttimer I knew I wanted them to reflect the benefits meditation brought to my life, which has been many.

I knew I wanted them to provide tools for trauma survivors, for it was trauma healing meditations that brought me to meditation, to begin with.

Like so many people, maybe even you, I’ve suffered many traumas in my life. Admittedly, I chose unhealthy ways to cope with trauma starting at a young age. Why don’t we learn how to cope with difficult thoughts & feelings in school? In my opinion, this is a much-needed curriculum for most people, all over the world. Don’t get me started, I could talk about this for days, but I’ll spare you 😉

Meditation was an invaluable healing tool for me. It was something I needed & I didn’t even know it. When I realized I needed it I fought it. Was meditation too hippy-dippy? NO! It was everything I needed!

Meditation can help you process trauma in so many healthy ways, I’d like to share how it helped me in hopes that it could help you too 😘

🌙 It normalized my trauma. Surviving trauma can feel lonely & alienating. It can cause you to isolate, because you may feel like no one understands you or what you’ve been through, but you are not alone.

🌙 It’s a support group when you’re not ready for a real support group. It’s a stepping stone during a period of healing when you just want to be alone as you process your feelings.

🌙 Builds healthy coping techniques – Meditation itself is a healthy coping technique, but a lot of meditations also provide breathing exercises, body scanning, journal writing prompts & more.

🌙 Builds resilience – Nothing helped me bounce back from difficult experiences, thoughts & feelings like meditation & the more I meditate the more resilient I become.

🌙 Clarity & Meaning – Healing meditations helped me make sense of feelings & emotions, which made them easier to deal with & less frequent. It also gave meaning to my experience & inspired me to help others who were in need.

Happy healing fellow trauma survivors 😘🙌🏽❤️

Meditation Series: Healing Trauma Through Natural Elements – Part 4 – Earth

✨NEW MEDITATION SERIES ON INSIGHT TIMER

This is the 4th & final part of the Healing Trauma Through Natural Elements series. This guided series is centered around healing trauma in a safe & healthy way as we channel earth’s natural elements. Today’s healing element is earth. Earth is about stability, strength & growth. It is here that you’ll find your footing & lay a solid foundation to rebuild your life & step back out into the world. This meditation will utilize visualization & sound healing.

If you have not completed parts 1-3 of this series, where we focused on Air, Fire & Water as healing elements, I would highly suggest starting there first as these meditations connect to one another in order.

I hope you enjoyed this trauma healing meditation series. Trauma healing is hard work, I know from personal experience, but you showed up and you did the work and I want you to take a moment to congratulate yourself for starting the healing process and completing this series.

Though these meditations connect to one another in order I would like to remind you that you can repeat these meditations as many times as you’d like. Naturally, there will be an element in this series that resonates more deeply with you than another. Trust that feeling and come back to it and any of the others in this series as many times as is necessary to help guide you on your healing journey.

Thank you for meditating with me! I thoroughly enjoyed creating this series and I can’t wait to create more meditations for you ✨

Listen to the meditation here.

You can come back to these meditations for daily support on your healing journey. I can’t wait to meditate with you!

Meditation Series: Healing Trauma Through Natural Elements – Part 3 – Water

✨ NEW MEDITATION SERIES ON INSIGHT TIMER ✨

This is part 3 of the Healing Trauma Through Natural Elements series. This guided 4-part series is centered around healing trauma in a safe & healthy way as we channel earth’s natural elements. Today’s healing element is water, the protective womb stage of healing. Today you’ll mend & rebuild. You’ll go fully inside of yourself to provide love & protection, to heal & move forward with your life.

I hope these meditations have been helpful for you so far. I know from personal experience that trauma healing can be very triggering. I would suggest moving at your own pace through this series. You may even want to work through a single element multiple times before moving on to the next one. For example, if Air feels incredibly healing for you and you feel it’s helping you safely move through blocked feelings, focus on Air for a while before moving on to Fire. You can repeat these meditations as many times as you’d like. Think about it like watching a movie, every time you watch the same movie you see and pick up on new things you didn’t notice before, meditation is like that too. New feelings and emotions will come up every time you meditate. Allow these feelings and emotions to come up and flow freely. This is your body’s way of releasing trauma and navigating painful feelings and emotions that have been suppressed.

This meditation will utilize visualization & sound healing.

If you have not completed parts 1 & 2, where we focused on Air & Fire as healing elements, I would highly suggest starting there first as these meditations connect to one another in order.

I hope you’re enjoying this series. The 4th & final part of this series will be released later this week 🤗

Meditation Series: Healing Trauma Through Natural Elements – Part 2 – Fire

✨ NEW MEDITATION SERIES ON INSIGHT TIMER ✨

This is part 2 of the Healing Trauma Through Natural Elements series. This guided 4-part series is centered around healing trauma in a safe & healthy way as we channel earth’s natural elements. Today’s healing element is fire, where we’ll be free to feel anger & disappointment about our experience, as we focus on healing & clearing space for growth & transformation.

I know trauma healing can be very triggering, but as a trauma survivor myself I know the healing process is integral to moving forward with your life in a healthy way. Shoving it down, bottling it up, and pretending it’s not there will only make matters worse. I know, because I tried that first & it didn’t work. My best advice for you is to use these meditations as a safe space to allow feelings and emotions to come up without judgment or trying to change them. Don’t force them down, let them flow freely. This is your body’s way of releasing trauma, it’s detoxing.

This meditation will utilize visualization & sound healing.

If you have not completed part 1, where we focused on Air as a healing element, I would highly suggest starting there first as these meditations connect to one another in order.

I hope you’re enjoying this series. Part 3 will be released early next week 🤗

Healing Trauma Requires Consistency – Try This 6-Week Consistency Challenge

How would you define trauma?

I bet everyone has a slightly, if not drastically, different definition of trauma or opinion of what a truly traumatic experience would be.

Merriam-Webster defines trauma as; an injury (such as a wound) to living tissue caused by an extrinsic agent; a disordered psychic or behavioral state resulting from severe mental or emotional stress or physical injury; an emotional upset; an agent, force, or mechanism that causes trauma.

I would without a doubt describe what the world is going through as traumatic. I’m familiar with trauma, I’m a survivor myself & I coach my clients through past & present traumatic experiences via mindfulness, meditation, mindset coaching & yoga.

No matter what your definition might be there’s 1 thing I know for sure; healing, growth & change require consistency.

A consistent healing practice makes ALL the difference & right now we all could use a dose of consistency in our lives. The world feels like it’s gone mad and it’s hard to grasp or wrap your head around.

So here’s my challenge for you…

1st – Ask yourself what helps you find peace, calm & healing in times that feel overwhelming, painful, or traumatic? Make a list, of let’s say 10-20 things that elicit the above mentioned feelings. It might be therapy, a support group, meditation, going for a walk, taking a bath, journaling, talking to someone you love, the possibilities are endless.

2nd – Commit to incorporating at least 6 of these things into your schedule. Feel free to do more, but don’t do less than 6. I want you to actually put it on your calendar, like you would a meeting for work or an appointment with your doctor. Each week, for 6 weeks, I want you to do at least 1 thing from your list that brings balance, consistency, peace, calm & healing back into your life.

You’d be surprised how healing a little consistency can be, how “normal” it can make you feel when the world around you is everything but, how much more balanced you’ll feel when you incorporate even 1 thing into your schedule that makes you feel a little less like you’re spiraling & are lacking control over traumatic experiences that are no fault of your own.

Survivor Resources

Being a survivor of any trauma can be very lonely, scary & confusing. My healing journey was long, it was hard, but I persevered and today I am stronger than ever. I have my bad days, just like the rest of us. I have days when triggers are all around me and I have to dig into my healing toolbox and figure out what’s going to comfort me through my fears and doubts. Resources are EVERYTHING! Talk therapy is fantastic if you find the right therapist and have the means to pay for it. Support groups are incredible but from my experience it can take some time and courage to venture back out into the world. In this blog post I have provided some resources that don’t require you to leave your home if that’s not emotionally accessible to you at the moment. Of course if you’re further along on your healing journey these resources will be incredibly helpful for you as well.

If you have question or need to talk to someone please reach out. I am here for you, you are not alone.

Books

Some of the books I’ve suggested here are not directly related to trauma, but they’re the books I found to be the most helpful on my healing journey. I hope the’re helpful for you as well.
