Listen To Your Body

How often do you get quiet enough to truly listen to the signs your body is sending you?

A great example is eating something that upsets your stomach over & over & over again…guilty 👋🏽 The upset tummy is the message!!! That’s just one example, but our bodies send us thousands, millions of messages all the time…begging us to slow down, eat, get more sleep, exercise, eat better, manage our stress levels, etc.

I learned a very hard lesson when I got diagnosed with Lupus. Your body will go to great lengths to get your attention if you won’t listen to all the little cues along the way.

I had SO many issues before I finally fell flat on my face with a chronic disease that currently has no cure. I wish I knew then what I know now…

On Tuesday I posted about carving out just 3 minutes per day to focus on your physical and/or mental health, this is how I began my journey to remission. Not joking!

I would set a timer to go off every day & for 3 minutes I would get quiet enough to reflect on how I was feeling that day & what I thought I needed more and/or less of. My 3 minutes started with journaling. Do not underestimate this technique, it was my daily journals that revealed a pattern in my symptoms & that documented pattern lead my doctor to the tests that ultimately determined that Lupus was causing 90% of my health issues.

Once diagnosed I bought 75 books on autoimmune diseases & got to work 🤪 To this day I still set a timer to go off every day but I spend more time focusing on my physical/mental health now. I started by bumping it up to 10-15 minutes, then 20-30, some days I’m even able to squeeze in a solid 60 min. The more important thing was that I was creating a healthy daily habit filled with all sorts of modalities that were making me better.

Some days 3 minutes is truly all you’ll have, some days you’ll get a solid 60 minutes & that’s awesome, but what truly matters is that you dedicate time to take care of YOURSELF, every day!

It took me 3 years to put myself into remission…but I AM IN REMISSION! How cool is that! It took time & dedication but I did it & so can you!

Take care of yourself, today, tomorrow & every day!

Mindful Movement & Yoga – Tip #1 – Explore

Think about exercise like dating…

EXPLORE! EXPLORE! EXPLORE!

😂🤣

I used to force myself to move my body in ways that did not feel good physically or emotionally. I did it because a friend did it and loved it and said I would too. I did it because it was the new thing. I did it because it was working for other people, but just like dating what works for one person doesn’t mean it will work for someone else.

So I started to explore LOTS of different options; yoga, pilates, cycling, weight-lifting, running, brisk walking, etc. etc.

All this exploring lead to a healthy & harmonious relationship between moving my body in a way that felt physically good AND made me emotionally happy.

BONUS…because I was happy, my body felt good, and I was seeing results I stuck with it! I wanted to work out, okay not all the time, but definitely more often than when I was forcing my aching Lupus joints to run in the blazing sun (two things that are typically big no-nos for people with Lupus) 😫 I looked forward to it because it was the right relationship for me.

Instead of comparing my exercise experience with those around me, I stopped to ask myself what I wanted. I took some time to determine what I was looking for in the relationship. I was clear about what my goals were, how I wanted it to make me feel, how far I was willing to push myself to get there, and where my boundaries were.

My advice for you is to make a list of types of exercises that seem interesting to you and then try them on for size. Ditch the ones that either don’t feel good in your physical body or leave you feeling bored, stressed, or anxious. The ones that feel good, excite you, stimulate you, and eventually lead to the results you were looking for are gold 👍🏽

Step 1: Find what feels good for YOU ❤️

Confident & Happy In Your Own Skin!

How comfortable is it for you to be alone with your thoughts?

Confession – I used to think I was just an extremely extroverted human in my younger years. It was rare that I didn’t have plans. I filled every second with something; work, school, friends, insert distraction, insert distraction, insert distraction.

Years later & thousands of dollars in therapy 😂 I realized all I was trying to do was avoid, avoid, avoid. I was avoiding all of my uncomfortable feelings & emotions. It’s sad really. I often wonder how many people are living their lives like this & don’t realize their completely burned out by their own distraction tactics. I know I was & it took some digging, hard work & commitment to figure it out.

Truth -Today I can honestly say that I love hanging out with myself 🤣 and with very little distractions. In fact, I’m more introverted now than ever. I’m 100% comfortable being alone with myself & my thoughts & I owe this to my exceptional therapist, dedication & mindfulness.

More truth – Getting to this point was PAINFUL! It was not pleasant work at all 😩 Rummaging through all those neglected feelings & emotions was HORRIBLE (just trying to set up realistic expectations of the process, haha).

BUT…it was SO worth it! I’m so glad I stuck it out, ugly cried 1 billion times & cared for all those feelings & emotions that deserved my time & attention, because now they’ve been put to rest.

Don’t get me wrong, I am NOT perfect, FAR from it, but now when a sneaky upsetting feeling or emotion pops up I know how to deal with it in real-time & I’m over it in less than 24 hours 🎉

I’m here to ask, to beg you, to dedicate time to healing old wounds, nurturing painful feelings & emotions & making your mental health a priority! The payoff is priceless. Not only will you have an incredible relationship with yourself but all of your relationships will flourish because when you’re happy in your own skin it permeates every aspect of your life.

Do one small thing today, or sometime this week, to help you get closer to nurturing parts of yourself that have been longing for attention. Take care of you so you can be fully present for others ❤️

Meditation & Mindfulness – Tip #1 – Start Small & Keep It Simple

When a new client comes to me and says, “I can’t meditate, I’ve tried and I just can’t do it,” the first thing I ask them is how long they’re trying to meditate for?

Almost every single time the answer is somewhere between 20-30 minutes! This is WAY too long for a beginner meditator and in my opinion, will absolutely set you up for “failure.”

So here’s my best advice, start small & keep it simple!

Use an app like Insight Timer or Headspace. Both of these apps have meditations for beginners.

Choose a meditation that’s between 2-5 minutes MAX! You can filter this out in these apps, actually, you can tailor the entire meditation directly to your specific needs at that moment.

For example, in Insight Timer, I can click on the search icon, type in what I’m looking for, we’ll use “beginner” for this example, hit search, choose “audio,” and then I can sort the results by rating, length, female or male voice, background music or none, etc. I believe personalizing your meditation experience like this makes it more enjoyable and easier to digest.

If you’d prefer not to spend time customizing your meditation experience so be it. On Insight Timer you can click on the home icon, choose “guided,” filter by time, and choose a meditation from the drop-down list. Headspace is similar, you’ll choose “meditate” on the home screen, click on the search icon, choose a category, let’s say “beginning meditation” for this example, and choose the first meditation under “start here.”

Once this becomes a simple habit for you consider adding either more time to your meditations or increase the number of times you meditate per week.

This technique has turned all my non-meditators into pro meditators.

Let’s Talk About Yoga Bullies

Have you ever had a bad experience in a public yoga class? If you said yes you’re not the only one. More than 50% of clients that come to me (I specialize in private coaching sessions) state their reason for pursuing private sessions as having bad experiences in public yoga classes. So today I want to talk about yoga bullying & peer pressure.

Don’t get me wrong there are PLENTY of amazing yoga teachers & studios out there, I have a few favorites of my my own, but even I’ve had some bad experiences.

I started doing yoga many years ago as I was told it was a great way to get exercise without hurting my joints or causing inflammation since I have Lupus. First of all, yoga is not one-size-fits-all. There are several styles that caused my body distress, but after years of trying things out I found Iyengar yoga & it became my happy place, but on my journey to this happy place I experienced a lot of pressure! It was so confusing. Wasn’t yoga supposed to be about my inner journey, no ego, pride, competition or judgement? That was not my experience, it is now, as I’ve found my people & practice that work for me, but over the years I’ve been pushed extremely hard by yoga teachers, told to preserve through the pain. I’ve been adjusted aggressively in class & called out publicly for using modifications when a pose didn’t feel safe for me. Once a teacher even told me there was no reason I shouldn’t be doing Handstand without modifications. I call bullshit! I was proud of myself! I was proud of not being in a hospital bed, or on a ton of medication. Doctors told me I was going to die, but I was in a yoga studio moving my body, that’s all that mattered to me. It’s MY practice, it’s YOUR practice! Do what feels safe for YOU! Pick a style that feels good in your body. Modify if you need to. Close your eyes, breath & listen to YOURSELF! Find a teacher that makes you feel empowered & challenged in a way that feels safe for you, your body & whatever ailments you might be dealing with. This practice is about self-inquiry & growth, not just on a physical level but also mentally. Move your body in a way that feels good & trust yourself. Feel safe! Feel empowered ❤️

Quick Tip – Handstand In A Doorway – Yoga Modification

Don’t even get me started with this pose! Because of the muscle atrophy in my upper back due to Lupus this pose has been the bane of my existence, but this modification, shared with me by my mentor, changed all of that. This modification has made Handstand possible for me. In addition to a regular yoga practice & consistently practicing prep poses this modification has allowed me to build the strength, alignment & knowledge I needed to do it without a doorway. Take your time, be safe, build the strength & knowledge needed to practice poses like this so you don’t hurt yourself. See disclaimer & contraindications in comments section before you try this & let me know if you have any questions 😘

HOW?
🤸🏻‍♀️Find a doorway clear of obstructions
🤸🏻‍♀️Face side of doorway without door
🤸🏻‍♀️Place fingertips about 1 inch away from doorframe, hands shoulder width apart, shoulders will stack directly over wrists
🤸🏻‍♀️Gently place back of head & middle of upper back down the middle of the doorframe
🤸🏻‍♀️Press palms down evenly, engage triceps, wrap bottom tips of shoulder blades towards side ribs & draw them down towards your tailbone
🤸🏻‍♀️Keep shoulder blades broad & firm outer upper arms in
🤸🏻‍♀️Draw shoulders away from ears, spread across collarbones
🤸🏻‍♀️Carefully walk 1 foot 1/2 way up doorway followed by the other. Press 1 foot into doorframe & slowly walk the opposite foot up to touch top of doorframe, once you feel secure follow with the other foot (NOTE: Height will determine if you can meet top of doorframe (short) or extend past doorframe (tall), either walk the feet up & press heels into doorframe or press insides of feet into the outsides of the doorframe)
🤸🏻‍♀️Neck is in line with spine
🤸🏻‍♀️Draw lower front ribs towards hipbones to avoid overarching lower back
🤸🏻‍♀️Direct inner thighs towards wall behind you, buttocks lifts towards heels, hug outer hips in towards midline
🤸🏻‍♀️Release inner & outer thighs back evenly, feet together
🤸🏻‍♀️To come down carefully walk 1 foot down doorway at a time. I like to hang forward for a bit & then rest forehead on doorframe since I’ve just been upside down for an extended period of time

Kick/walk up w/ opposite leg often to avoid creating imbalances 🙂

Contraindications:
⚠️ Carpal tunnel syndrome
⚠️ High blood pressure
⚠️ Glaucoma/detached retina
