My pandemic do’s & don’ts… What are yours?

In addition to limiting the amount of negative news I digest & keeping track of what I’m grateful for, I’m also keeping a list of promises I’ve made to myself during this challenging time. I look at this list EVERY DAY! It’s there to remind me what my do’s & don’ts are while traversing the ups & downs of this pandemic. What do’s & don’ts have you implemented to keep yourself physically & mentally healthy during COVID? Let me know in the comments👇🏽Here’s my list ❤️⠀
⠀
DO:⠀
👍🏽 Move your body for a minimum of 10 minutes per day⠀
👍🏽 Continue to eat healthy⠀
👍🏽Stay in touch with friends & family – Especially those who are living alone⠀
👍🏽 At least 1 mindfulness exercise per day for a minimum of 10 minutes – Breathwork, meditation, etc.⠀
👍🏽 Keep your brain active; read, puzzles, draw, play games, etc.⠀
👍🏽 Brain dump every morning & every night before you go to bed – This is basically just stream of conscious writing in my journal – I set a timer for 3-5 minutes depending on how much time I have and I don’t stop waiting until the timer goes off⠀
👍🏽 Get ready @ least 3 days per week – I do my hair and makeup like I’m going out & it feels SO good! It’s all about mindset!⠀
👍🏽 Get outside!⠀
👍🏽 Think about what you’re most looking forward to when this is over ⠀
⠀
⠀
DON’T:⠀
🚫 Over do it with news⠀
🚫 Get lazy⠀
🚫 Forget there are ways to be social without being physically social – Houseparty, Zoom, etc.⠀
🚫 Eat like crap ⠀
🚫 Find yourself in a web of complaints & feeling sorry for yourself. You’re luckier than most! ⠀
🚫 But also, don’t shove your feelings down either – It’s okay to not be okay – Just don’t allow yourself to live there for too long⠀
🚫 Forget about your practice – Continue to do yoga, meditation, breathwork, mindfulness ⠀
🚫 Focus only on the bad things that are happening⠀
🚫 Develop bad habits – Mainly don’t be a couch potato⠀
🚫 Smother your boyfriend or your pets, lol :)

Gratitude Journal Writing Prompt

This week at YogiNest is all about gratitude, so I created this writing prompt to help you, during this mandatory pause, to do just that…to pause and think about what makes you tick, what makes you most happy and fulfilled, and what you’re most grateful for even when the world around you feels like it’s falling apart. Take a moment to ask yourself the following 5 questions 👇🏽Spend some time on this and write your answers down in your journal or on a scratch piece of paper. It doesn’t matter where you write it, what matters is that you’re taking a moment, for yourself, to think about the people in your life that make you feel loved, to think about what makes you happy & what you’re most looking forward to when this is all over. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and even though things might be lost or look different at the end of this chapter, there will still be glimmers of hope…what are your glimmers of hope👇🏽

1. List 3 things you’re grateful for

2. Name 3 people that make you feel loved. Why? Can you take a few minutes out of your day to reach out to them and let them know?

3. List 3 things that make you happy

4. What are 3 self-care things you can do today that could help you find relief from stress?

5. What 3 things are you most looking forward to after quarantines have been lifted?

Navigating COVID-19 With An Autoimmune Disease

I want to talk about navigating a pandemic when you have an autoimmune disease. Living with an autoimmune disease on a normal day is challenging. Once you’ve been doing it for a while it just becomes part of your daily routine and you barely notice it anymore, but other people definitely do, lol 😂I wash my hands profusely. I can’t share food with pretty much anyone, ever. I can’t spend too much time in the sun, lay on the beach, take a hot yoga class, or camp when it’s too cold or too hot. I have to keep my stress levels low. Running makes my knees swell up like balloons, and I’m always afraid of flaring, ending up in the hospital, and facing a mountain of medical debt. Fast forward to pandemic… multiple all of this by 10,000 and then add a triple dose of stress & fear!

If you are struggling with an autoimmune disease the best advice I can give you is to find a way to keep your stress levels WAY down! I know this is scary, I’m feeling it too, but stress will greatly impact your immune system, and you need that sucker to keep you strong and healthy right now!

Ways to reduce stress 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽
Meditation, breathwork, move your body at least once per day, get plenty of sleep, journal, keep in touch with friends & family often, take a bath or hot shower, go for a secluded walk with a mask and gloves (stay away from other people), listen to music, draw or paint. What makes you happy? What helps you reduce stress? Don’t forget to do these things now more than ever.

Obviously you should also be very strict about social distancing & wash your hands! You should only go out when you absolutely must, otherwise have someone else run errands for you if at all possible. I have not entered a public facility since the quarantine. My boyfriend is running all errands, and he’s wearing a mask and gloves so he doesn’t come home and get me sick. If you’re on the Nextdoor app I’m sure you’ll find plenty of posts about people who are willing to do your shopping for you, I’ve seen it many times over the last few weeks. Find someone to help you and stay inside. Delivery services can be very helpful and I know a lot of pharmacies are offering free deliveries right now as well.

If you need someone to talk to send me a DM. I’m a good listener and I understand what you might be going through, you don’t have to do this alone ❤️

3-Minute Beginner’s Body Scan

If you’ve only got a few short minutes but you desperately need to reduce stress & anxiety quickly so you can go about your day feeling more centered and grounded than this body scan is for you!

All you need for today’s practice is yourself & a comfortable place to sit or lie down with little to no distractions.

Body scanning is an incredibly helpful tool to relieve stress & anxiety so you can live your life feeling more centered and grounded. It also provides a ton of useful information about you, and what’s going on in your physical and mental body. We’re all so busy all the time, caught up in a million things, moving so fast through our day that we might not notice the messages our body is sending us, all day, every day. If you can create a habit of scanning your body, from the top of your head, all the way down to your toes, even once a day, for 60 seconds you will begin to build a better relationship with your physical & mental body. If you can learn to listen to the messages your body is sending you you might notice when you are hungry, full, need rest, are getting sick, need to slow down, etc. And if you can meet these messages without judgment in a more timely & loving fashion you might be able to avoid a lot of emotional & physical pain & illness, just by taking a second to listen to the messages your body is sending you. How cool is that? And it works, I know from personal experience. I partially attribute my road to remission to the powerful benefits of a regular body scanning routine. Body scanning can also make you feel more present in your life, which I guarantee you will have a positive domino effect on everyone around you. Improving not only the relationship you have with yourself but with others as well.

So what is it? It’s very simple actually. All you need to do is sit or lie down comfortably, somewhere that has little to no distractions. Then, starting at the top of the head, you’ll slowly scan your entire body until you’ve reached your toes. Feelings and emotions will come up for you, they may be physical and or mental. You’re meant to meet these feelings with an open mind and a kind heart. It’s just information about you and where you are today. Then you take that information and pivot your day. Maybe you haven’t eaten lunch yet and you didn’t even realize until your scan that you were incredibly hungry, go eat. Maybe you notice a tickle in your throat, or you’re slightly warm, are you getting sick? Do you need to take some time to relax and recover. Body scanning can actually be a very useful preventative measure for those of us who don’t know how to slow down and listen to the messages our body is sending us.

Staying Grounded in Uncertain Times

I’m trying to stay grounded when the world around me feels like the complete opposite! I try to stay informed. I’m not an ignorance is bliss kind of gal. I like to get my hands dirty. I like to think I can be part of the change, moving the world in a positive direction, in every possible way I can; but everything feels SO much bigger than me right now, and I’ve had to tune some things out for my mental sanity. I feel like a coward, like I should be swimming in knowledge at all times or I’m part of the problem, but the reality is…I can’t change the world. I can help, that’s for sure, but I’m looking at things the wrong way, which is why I needed to recenter 🧘🏻‍♀️⠀

This forced isolation & down time is an opportunity to pivot. Not only in my business but as a human on this planet. Being silent right now has it’s positives. What can I do to take care of myself in this moment? How can I heal my pain, that’s directly related to what’s going on in the world, so I can pour positivity right back out into a world that needs it now more than ever. If I’m not well, I’m no good to anyone, and I definitely won’t be able to SAVE THE WORLD, lol 😂

I know this is hard, some of you have lost your jobs, or are on mandatory leave without pay, and that sucks, and I’m sorry! Some of you are sick, or have lost someone, and I’m so sorry. Here’s my question for you… How can you take care of yourself right now? How can you heal your pain so you can go back out into the world, when the dust has settled, and make the world a better place because of the lessons you learned when things were darker than they’ve ever been? What do you need right now? I’m asking myself the same question…let’s do this together. Trying times build warriors. Hard times build strength. Dark times build knowledge. We will come out the other side of this stronger, but use this time to take care of yourself and heal.
