Break Old Habits With Mindful Awareness

Did you know you have the power to change the physical structure of your brain, just by being more aware of how you talk to yourself, the quality of your thoughts & paying more attention to your breath?

Enter mindful awareness…

Would you talk to someone the way you talk to yourself? If you saw someone smash their knee into a coffee table would you say, you’re a clumsy idiot? My guess is no. If someone you loved didn’t get the promotion they were hoping for would you say, of course you didn’t, you’re not smart enough, you’re not good enough, you don’t deserve it? I’m gonna go with a hell no on this one unless you’re a monster!

Why do we talk to ourselves this way? Does it have something to do with the way we were raised? Or the way others have treated or talked to us? Is it so ingrained in us that we can’t help ourselves & it just comes out? No matter where this self-critical dialogue came from there’s hope.

You have the power to change your experience with life’s stressors, anxieties, trauma & painful or depressing events & it’s easier than you think. Bonus, you can change the structure of your brain just by changing the conversation you have with yourself about your daily experiences.

It’s this simple 👇🏽

Depressed Experience = Something caused me to feel depressed. This is an opportunity to learn more about myself; what makes me tick, what makes me happy, what makes me sad, what I need more of & what I need to let go of? This is an opportunity to learn…

Stressful Experience = Being late is stressful. If I left earlier it would give me more time to combat the unknown & heavy traffic. If I leave earlier & plan better I will be less stressed. This is an opportunity to learn…

If you can implement this simple change in your daily conversations with yourself you have the opportunity to:

👉🏽 Break old/bad habits & build new ones

👉🏽 Develop healthier awareness & understanding of stressful/painful experiences

👉🏽 Learn & grow from stressful/painful experiences

👉🏽 Build a more loving relationship with yourself, which will help you…

👉🏽 Build better relationships with others

👉🏽 Open your mind to new coping mechanisms/perspectives

👉🏽 Rewire the brain’s neural pathways

Heal the root…not the symptoms!

On a scale of 1-10 (1 = little to no stress & 10 = max stress) how stressed are you right now?

Did you know that roughly 7 in 10 people suffer from stress-related physical & emotional issues!

COVID, politics, finances, work, relationships, the environment, global unrest, health & wellness, cost of food, access to food & water…these are just a few things that could be affecting your level of stress. It can be incredibly overwhelming, I see you & I feel you.

So here’s what I want to address today – treating the SYMPTOMS of stress/emotional pain vs. the ROOT CAUSE. It has become “normal” to cover up pain & trauma, or shove it down, instead of nurturing & healing the root cause of stress & emotional pain. That might look something like taking medication, numbing it w/ destructive lifestyle choices, or trying to ignore that it exists even though it’s still affecting us in a big way.

Imagine this scenario – There’s a water leak in your house & it’s begun to damage your walls & destroy the paint. Instead of getting to the ROOT of the problem, you decide to buy some pretty wallpaper & cover it up. This is an example of treating the SYMPTOM! The water leak still exists, it was never fixed. So every time it leaks it causes damage to the paint & the wallpaper & whatever you chose to do to cover up what the leak does to the brand new wallpaper. It’s never going to stop causing damage because the leak still exists!

Apply this to whatever root causes are creating stress & emotional pain/trauma for you.

It’s incredibly important that we dedicate time to understand what is causing our emotional/physical stress, pain & trauma. It’s not always a fun process, but it won’t just go away by covering it up with pretty wallpaper or paint. The world is noisy right now, it’s so loud! Take some time to be quiet with yourself, to explore your environment…is it safe, is it nurturing you, is it making you happy? Do you need to make some adjustments? Do you need to fix a leak?

This is the work of true healing. Focus on the root, not just the symptom.

How To Manage Stress In Healthy Ways

Stress is an unavoidable fact of life. It’s part of the human condition. Uncertainties & an inability to fully control life events are something we all have to deal with. It’s not hard to get overwhelmed. In fact these days it’s very easy to get overwhelmed with feelings of stress, anxiety, depression, worry, isolation & panic.

It’s imperative to cultivate inner resources for dealing with these feelings. I’m here to try to equip you with as many coping strategies for dealing with the aforementioned feelings & emotions as possible.

One way to take more control of your stress is to track it & find coping mechanisms that work for you.

You can start by making a list of 10 or more things in your life that produce feelings of stress & anxiety. List the stressor, then write a brief description next to the stressor. For example, if you said “Driving in LA,” your description could be, “the constant traffic & noise makes me feel claustrophobic.” Now rate this on a scale of 1-10. With 1 being very little stress & 10 being an extreme amount of stress.

You’ll want to keep this list somewhere that you can come back to it roughly every 3 months or so. Set a calendar event so you can keep track of what stressors maybe disappeared (remove or lower rating), which ones intensified (adjust rating & coping mechanism), and add & rate new stressors that presented themselves (come up with a coping mechanism for new stressor).

You’ll need to find coping mechanism that work for you but here are some helpful suggestions; get outside, meditate, exercise, breathwork, therapy, journal, etc. I’ve also added some guided writing prompts you can consistently come back to help manage your stressors & track habitual patterns.

For the entire month of May I am offering new clients the opportunity to pay what you can for virtual coaching sessions in meditation, mindfulness, breathwork & yoga. Now more than ever we need to make sure we’re taking care of ourselves both physically & mentally. I’d love to help you through this incredibly hard time. Mental Health Matters Too

I love teaching yoga. I started YogiNest because of the positive effects yoga had on reducing my symptoms from Lupus, but the thing that really gets me going is the brain. I love everything about the brain. I nerd out hard about the brain. Which leads me to mindfulness & mindset coaching. Multiply how much I love teaching yoga by 1,000 and that’s how much I love being a mindset coach!

Like many others I’ve suffered multiple major traumas in my life. When I was younger I had no idea what to do with my feelings and emotions. I REALLY wish I knew about meditation & mindfulness practices when I was younger, things would have been so different for me. I’m so grateful I know about it now and that I get to share it with others.

As the days and months go by with this pandemic I’ve noticed a major uptick in stress, anxiety, and depression; and it breaks my heart! We need to wear face masks, we need to wash our hands, we need to keep our distance, we need to open our economy back up. This is all I hear about every day on the news, and it’s all true, but why isn’t anyone talking about how to maintain our mental health?

If our brain isn’t happy & healthy nothing in our life is going to function properly, so why isn’t anyone talking about this? These feelings are tricky to traverse, even as adults. I see it every day. This is what I do for a living!

Here in LA things are still very much shut down & I’m really starting to see the negative effects it’s having on my clients & the people around me. I’m here to help in any way that I possibly can.

I will absolutely 100% continue to pepper yoga stuff into my feed, because movement is therapy too, but I want to provide as many mindset coaching tips as I possibly can right now. The world needs it!

If you’re feeling stressed, anxious, or depressed know that I am here for you. Message me, call me. I’m not a doctor but I’m a very good listener. I’m a shoulder to lean on. You are not alone!

Navigating COVID-19 With An Autoimmune Disease

I want to talk about navigating a pandemic when you have an autoimmune disease. Living with an autoimmune disease on a normal day is challenging. Once you’ve been doing it for a while it just becomes part of your daily routine and you barely notice it anymore, but other people definitely do, lol 😂I wash my hands profusely. I can’t share food with pretty much anyone, ever. I can’t spend too much time in the sun, lay on the beach, take a hot yoga class, or camp when it’s too cold or too hot. I have to keep my stress levels low. Running makes my knees swell up like balloons, and I’m always afraid of flaring, ending up in the hospital, and facing a mountain of medical debt. Fast forward to pandemic… multiple all of this by 10,000 and then add a triple dose of stress & fear!

If you are struggling with an autoimmune disease the best advice I can give you is to find a way to keep your stress levels WAY down! I know this is scary, I’m feeling it too, but stress will greatly impact your immune system, and you need that sucker to keep you strong and healthy right now!

Ways to reduce stress 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽
Meditation, breathwork, move your body at least once per day, get plenty of sleep, journal, keep in touch with friends & family often, take a bath or hot shower, go for a secluded walk with a mask and gloves (stay away from other people), listen to music, draw or paint. What makes you happy? What helps you reduce stress? Don’t forget to do these things now more than ever.

Obviously you should also be very strict about social distancing & wash your hands! You should only go out when you absolutely must, otherwise have someone else run errands for you if at all possible. I have not entered a public facility since the quarantine. My boyfriend is running all errands, and he’s wearing a mask and gloves so he doesn’t come home and get me sick. If you’re on the Nextdoor app I’m sure you’ll find plenty of posts about people who are willing to do your shopping for you, I’ve seen it many times over the last few weeks. Find someone to help you and stay inside. Delivery services can be very helpful and I know a lot of pharmacies are offering free deliveries right now as well.

If you need someone to talk to send me a DM. I’m a good listener and I understand what you might be going through, you don’t have to do this alone ❤️

For the entire month of April I am offering new clients the opportunity to pay what you can for virtual coaching sessions in meditation, mindfulness, breathwork & yoga. Now more than ever we need to make sure we’re taking care of ourselves both physically & mentally. I’d love to help you through this incredibly hard time. Be well & take care of each other!
